Cinespace Sells for $1 Billion; Alex Pissios to Exit

During the financial crisis of 2008, real estate developers like Alex Pissios and others came dangerously close to losing all they owned. He made the decision to join the family in another business venture. Alex Pissios father Nick Mirkopoulos had established a facility for the production of films and television shows in Toronto a number of years previously. This studio in Canada was host to major productions such as Chicago, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture, and The Handmaid’s Tale, which was nominated for a Golden Globe.

During 2011, Mirkopoulos and Pissios acquired sixty acres of land in the North Lawndale area of Chicago, Illinois, which was once occupied by the Ryerson Steel complex. They established Cinespace Chicago Movie Studios, which quickly became known as the “Hollywood of the Midwest” due to the fact that it was the largest independent film studio located anywhere but Los Angeles.

Cinespace provides residents of the area with chances for work and education in the field of digital media, which has resulted in the creation of more then 15,000 jobs in the neighborhood and the region. The direction provided by Pissios has been critical to the success of Chicago and Illinois in attracting and over three billion in revenue from the film industry.

The Cinespace complex has 32 sound stages, dozens of help stimulate and support spaces, as well as tenants that provide casting services, equipment, comment houses, as well as lighting and sound rentals and sales, as well as a 3D animation studio. Cinespace Chicago has been the executive producer for more than 40 major productions, such as the films Disparate, Converters, and Batman v Man of steel: Dawn of Fairness; series from Netflix, HBO, and Amazon; and television shows, such as Empire and Shameless, in addition to the Philadelphia Fire, Chicago PD, and Philadelphia Med. Additionally, the complex is home to the Chicago location of Lagunitas Brewery, which includes a brewery, bar, and event space totaling 300,000 square feet.
